Alex Sutherland: Executive Producer and Consultant (and
co-founder)
Alex Sutherland co-founded Outsider Television with Callum Macrae in 1993 and directed
the company’s first, award-winning Dispatches documentary on the Loss of the Marchioness.
She went on to produce and direct and then series produce many high profile current
affairs programmes and documentaries series before becoming a commissioning editor
at Channel Four and FIVE. She now combines her work with Outsider with executive
producing for a number of independent television companies and broadcasters, including
Dragonfly Film and Television and National Geographic Channels.
Over the past two years she’s executive produced a 4-part natural history series
Among the Apes, presented by Charlotte Uhlenbroek for FIVE and BBC Worldwide, a new
Tony Robinson geology series for Nat Geo and C4 The Birth of Britain, two series
of NatGeo’s Greatest British Machines with Chris Barrie, a BBC1 documentary From
Woolies to Wellies: One Woman’s Fight for the High Street, and Channel 4’s factual
entertainment series Worlds and Me… presented by Mark Dolan.
She has also worked as an executive producer for IMG on a prime time ITV show about
Eric Cantona returning to Manchester to explore the devotion of fans 14 years after
his glory days at United, and for September Films on an Extraordinary People for
FIVE about the heaviest man in the world. She’s also acted as a consultant for the
new owners of the Pathe archives.
Whilst at Channel 4 and FIVE, Alex commissioned a wide range of popular, successful
and award-winning programmes, formats and series. As Controller of History at FIVE,
she was responsible for building up the successful and award-winning history strand
Revealed, as well as commissioning series such as Disappearing Britain and Big Ideas
that Changed the World. At C4 she commissioned factual one-offs such as How the twin
Towers Collapsed, and Torso in the Thames.
