Alex Sutherland co-founded Outsider Television with Callum Macrae in 1993 and directed the company’s first, award-winning Dispatches documentary on the Loss of the Marchioness. She went on to produce and direct and then series produce many high profile current affairs programmes and documentaries series before becoming a commissioning editor at Channel Four and FIVE. She now combines her work with Outsider with executive producing for a number of independent television companies and broadcasters, including Dragonfly Film and Television and National Geographic Channels.

Over the past two years she’s executive produced a 4-part natural history series Among the Apes, presented by Charlotte Uhlenbroek for FIVE and BBC Worldwide, a new Tony Robinson geology series for Nat Geo and C4 The Birth of Britain, two series of NatGeo’s Greatest British Machines with Chris Barrie, a BBC1 documentary From Woolies to Wellies: One Woman’s Fight for the High Street, and Channel 4’s factual entertainment series Worlds and Me… presented by Mark Dolan.

She has also worked as an executive producer for IMG on a prime time ITV show about Eric Cantona returning to Manchester to explore the devotion of fans 14 years after his glory days at United, and for September Films on an Extraordinary People for FIVE about the heaviest man in the world. She’s also acted as a consultant for the new owners of the Pathe archives.

Whilst at Channel 4 and FIVE, Alex commissioned a wide range of popular, successful and award-winning programmes, formats and series. As Controller of History at FIVE, she was responsible for building up the successful and award-winning history strand Revealed, as well as commissioning series such as Disappearing Britain and Big Ideas that Changed the World. At C4 she commissioned factual one-offs such as How the twin Towers Collapsed, and Torso in the Thames.
